Frequently Answered Questions

GENERAL FAQs:

Q: When does the season begin?

A: The season typically starts each year on August 1st.

Q: We have a family vacation scheduled for a week in August. Will our kid still be able to play?

A: DPWFA strongly encourages families to schedule their vacations before the start of the season. However, that may not always work. You kids are still eligible to play, but it could effect their progress on being prepared for the start of the season and their ability to participate in pre-season scrimmages if they play football. Please discuss any vacations with your kid's head coach.

Q: It is raining out. Is there practice?

A: Depending on the severity of the rain, DPWFA may cancel practice for the whole program so as to not damage the practice field. We will send out an email if we are canceling practice due to weather. If DPWFA does not cancel practices, it will be up to the head coach of your kid's team on whether or not they will have practice. The head coach will email the team if he plans on canceling practice. If you hear nothing, assume practice is on.

Q: I would like to volunteer for something. Who should I speak to?

A: There is usually a Board Member at the field during practices near the snack shack. Please speak with a Board Member and they will be able to help you out. You can also inquire via email at admin@dedhamyouthfootball.com

Q: What kind of volunteer opportunities are there?

A: We are glad you asked!! There are many opportunities to volunteer through the year depending on how much time you have to give such as Team Parent, Concession Stand, Mandatory Play Recorder (MPR), Chain Crew (holding first down markers and down maker during games), Photographer, etc. Just reach out to us. We will take any help we can get!!

REGISTRATION FAQs:

Q: I just registered my kid for cheer/flag/football, where is the required paperwork I have to print and fill out?

A: There is a couple of places you can access the required paperwork for your child. Once you finish registration and your receive the post purchase message "Thank you for registering", there is a button at the bottom of that page that reads "Return To Account Overview". Click that button and it will redirected you to where the paperwork to be printed can be found. If you missed that page, you can always just log into your account and on your homepage there should be a section titled "Recent Registration" with your child's name in it. To the right of their name should be a button that reads "Print Forms". Click that and you will be redirected to the page where the paperwork can be printed out.

Q: What paperwork am I required to return after I register online?

A: If there is one thing about football and cheer programs, its that there is never a shortage of the amount of required paperwork. Please download the "2019 AYF_DPWFA Check List" from the Documents tab on the homepage. All of the required paperwork is available to print out from the website once your child is registered. See FAQ above.

Q: I printed out and filled out and obtained all of the required paperwork, what do I do with it?

A: Once you have all of the required paperwork as shown on the 2018 AYF DPWFA Checklist and are sure everything has been filled out and signed, you can mail it or drop it off to any of the following addresses:

Dedham Pee Wee Football Association, Inc.                             Jason Mammone                                   Katie Walker                                Mona Saltalamacchia

Q: Does DPWFA offer financial aid?

A: Yes we do. If you require financial aid to enroll your child(ren) into our program, you must download and complete the 2018 DPWFA Financial Aid package. This can be downloaded from the Documents tab on the Homepage. DPWFA has a limited amount of financial aid available and it is given out on a first come/first serve basis. You must fill out and mail in the package before July 14, 2018. The packages will not be reviewed until all required paperwork associated with the financial aid package is submitted. DPWFA will reach out to those who have applied on the status of their application before July 1, 2019.

TACKLE FOOTBALL FAQs:

Q: What is different between Pop Warner and AYF?

A: You will not notice much of a difference between the two organizations. The major difference is how the teams are comprised. Pop Warner is age & weight based and AYF has NO weight limit and is grade based/age protected. Below is a breakdown:

Grade:              Age Range:            Protected Age:                Protected Age Explanation:
5th Grade           9, 10, 11                        11                           11 in 5th Grade, cannot turn 12 on or before 8/1 (NO WEIGHT LIMIT)
6th Grade          10, 11, 12                       12                           12 in 6th Grade, cannot turn 13 on or before 8/1 (NO WEIGHT LIMIT)
7th Grade          11, 12, 13                       13                           13 in 7th Grade, cannot turn 14 on or before 8/1 (NO WEIGHT LIMIT)
8th Grade          12, 13, 14                       14                           14 in 8th Grade, cannot turn 15 on or before 8/1 (NO WEIGHT LIMIT)

Q: My kid is going into 4th Grade is he eligible to play tackle football?

A: 4th Graders may join the 5th Grade Team so long as you feel that your kid has the potential and maturity to play with the older kids. In the event that there are not enough 5th Graders to make a 5th Grade team, we will move all the 5th Graders up to the 6th Grade Team. We would once again extend the offer to have your kid play on the 6th Grade team if you feel as though your kid can perform at that level. If not, we would strongly suggest that you sign your kid up for the 4th Grade Flag team. See the Flag Football section below for more information.

Q: How are the Teams organized?

A: We are grade based, so in a perfect world where we have enough players we would field individual 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Grade teams. However, if enrollment is low for a particular grade, we will move them up to the next Grade. For example, if there were only eight 6th Graders and the 5th Grade Team had enough players for their own team, we would move the 6th Graders up to play on the 7th Grade Team. We can move players up, but never down.

Q: My kid is going into the 5th Grade, but will turn 12 before 8/1. Does that mean he cannot play on the 5th Grade Team?

A: Yes, that is correct. However, your kid is eligible to play on the 6th Grade Team. In the AYF, players can move up a level, but cannot move down a level.

Q: My kid weighs only 80 pounds and is going into the 7th Grade. I think he/she is too small to play on the 7th Grade Team. Can he/she be placed on the 6th Grade Team?

A: No. Your player would have to play on the 7th Grade Team. In the AYF, players can go up a level, but cannot go down a level. We take player safety very seriously and our coaches know well enough not to place a player in a position that would get them hurt. We would encourage you to speak with your player's coach about your concerns or reach out the DPWFA President at the email at the bottom of the page. You could also talk with some other parents that have been in the program for some time that have a smaller sized kid that has played and get their opinion on how the program has handled playing their kid.

Q: My kid is on the 6th grade team and there are only 8 players on it. Will they not have enough kids to have a team?

A: The AYF requires each team to have a minimum of 16 rostered players to be considered a team. If any particular grade level does not have enough players to form a team, they will be moved up to the next grade level for that season so they can continue to play. We are allowed to merge any number of lower grade teams with higher grade teams. Kids can play up, but cannot play down grade levels.

Q: Are there instructional tackle football teams?

A: A few years ago when enrollment was higher, we would have a 3rd/4th Grade tackle team that would be our instructional team. Now that we do not offer tackle for those grades, we will be using the 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Flag teams as our instructional team. Please see the Flag Football section below for additional details. Keep in mind that since our kids first taste at tackle football will be typically in 5th or 6th Grade, the coaches will certainly take the extra time with all 1st year players to make sure they are taught all the proper techniques to keep them safe while they learn the sport.

Q: How many practices per week are there?

A: This will depend on your kid's coach, but for the month of August and up to the first day of school starts in September, each team is allowed to practice for 2 hours, 5 days a week. Practice times are usually 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Monday through Friday at Memorial Park. Once school starts, coaches are allowed to have 2 hour practices only 3 days per week. Practice times are typically 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at Memorial Park. Your kid's coach should update the parents each week to what the practice schedule will be for the upcoming week. Please feel free to approach your coach before or after practice with any questions you may have.

Q: Are we expected to make every practice?

A: AYF is a competitive football program and the kids are expected to show up for every practice. Please be sure to inform your coach if your kid cannot make practice and especially if they cannot make a game. Sometimes kids will be unable to participate in games should they miss too much practice during the week of a game. This is up to the discretion of the head coach. This is done not to punish your kid, but for their safety and the safety of the other players. It is also not fair to the other kids who show up to practice everyday and work hard.

Q: This is my kids first year playing. Will he get any playing time during games?

A: Most certainly. AYF has a rule called the Mandatory Play Rule which states that depending on the size of the team all players must play a minimum of so many plays during a game. That play count ranges from 6 to 12 plays depending on the size of the team. Some kids will get more plays than others, but all of them will get the minimum required. At the younger levels, we try and encourage the coaches to try and give everyone the same amount of plays or at least make sure that everyone gets more than their required plays. There are volunteers on both sides of the field that are responsible to make sure every kid gets their mandatory plays. Coaches will face potential suspension for failure to do so.

Q: I would like to help out and coach my kid's football team. Who should I speak too?

A: We are usually always looking for head and assistant coaches. Whether you have no football experience or lots of experience, we can certainly use the help. Even if you do not have a kid in the football program and you want to help coach, we will be happy to have you involved. You can either email us at the admin email address at the bottom of the page or approach the head coach of your kid's team and ask if they need any assistant coaches. We will be sure we get you through all the required paperwork. We would prefer if your interested to reach out well before the season starts so we can get the paperwork out of the way. The other coaches of the program will help you get started and it won't be long till you can handle it all yourself. Please reach out as soon as possible if your interested.

FLAG FOOTBALL FAQs:

Q: What grade levels will flag football be offered? How many kids are needed to make a team?

A: We are offering flag for 3rd, 4th & 5th Graders. We are hoping to have a dedicated team at each of these gardes. However, if there are not enough players or enough teams in the league, we may have to combine grades. Unlike tackle football where the offense and defense are made up of 11 players, flag football is made up of 8 players. We need a minimum of 12 kids to field a flag team, but can have many more. If we get 25 or more kids to sign up, we will make more than one Dedham team at that grade level.

Q: My kid is enetering 2nd Grade, can he/she play on the 3rd Grade Team?

A: If you believe that your kid is capable and mature enough to play with the older kids, then we would be happy to have them sign up.

Q: When do practices start?

A: Practices start August 1 every year. Practices will be held at Memorial Field at the same time as the tackle program. We are anticipating having a minimum of 3  practices a week during the month of August and up till the first day of school. Practice days will be dependent on your coach. Practices will typicall be run from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Once school starts, there will be a minimum of 2 to 3 practices a week, usually Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

Q: When are the game played?

A: The games are typically played on Sundays. Our home games are played on the turf field at Dedham High School. The time will depend on where we are playing each week, but could be as early as 8 AM or as late as 4 PM. There may be special situations when a game will have to be played on Saturday. There may be situations where we have to host a flag game at Memorial Field, but our focus is to get all the teams on the High School Field on the same day.

Q: Who will our games be against?

A: It will depend on which of the other 19 Towns in our conference will field 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade flag teams. Last year, when the conference only had 10 Towns, Dedham and one other Town were the only ones to not have a 3rd & 4th Grade Team. We are fairly confident that we will have a full 8 game schedule facing a different Town each week now that we have 20 Towns in the conference. For 5th Grade there were only 2 other Towns that had a 5th Grade flag team last year, so it is possible that you will have multiple games against the same Town/Team at this Grade level unless more Towns offer 5th Grade flag.
